Modern humans have no choice but to choose. Choice that was to be the hallmark of liberty, in the conditions of capitalist consumerism becomes a trap: theoretically unlimited choice from which there is no escape. In these circumstances choosing less is to be more free. Less, but better? Things that last for years, not for one season? May it be better to spend your money on three carefully crafted and unique things than on thirty latest fads that will be thrown away after a season? Could it be worth paying for the work of a local producer instead of covering the costs of import, distribution, fuel and marketing of companies that mass produce stuff where labour is cheap?
\nContemporary New Craft means, first of all, the hands-on control of the maker over the entire production process. A product made by a craftsperson is different from a factory-made good because it is not alienated. And it is not that there are no machines involved in craft production; the thing is that the relationship between the product and the maker is different, as it is based on complex bodily knowledge.
\nCraftspeople, like musicians, create with their whole bodies. Three key elements \u2013 the material, the human, and the tool \u2013 constantly change and modify each other. The thing that gets made is not a fetish, but a witness to human ability to collaborate with the matter of the world.<\/p>\n
