It carries on itself the traces of touch, everyday life and relationships that have long since changed. Thus time does not diminish its value, it enriches it. Woods darken, ceramics cracks, metals acquire a patina; materials do not conceal the passage of time, but reveal it. By the same token, making something by hand requires patience. One must wait for it to come into being. Yet once it leaves the maker's workshop, the work of time continues. The thing made continues to change; time is not its adversary but its co-creator.

The exhibition reflects on the endurance of things and our relationship with materiality. It is neither a manifesto nor an attempt to prove a thesis. It is intended to leave the viewer with a feeling rather than a conclusion. It is a sketch, an invitation to experience which does not require opinion.

Punktem wyjścia dla wystawy jest rozwinięcie idei Tenderness, zaproponowanej przez historyka rzemiosła i kuratora Glenna Adamsona. For centuries, it has occupied a place on the fringes of art much closer to the demands and functionalities of everyday life. We rarely expect works of craft to offer critical commentaries or conceptual manifestos and this position gives craft a particular freedom; it allows it to speak about what is sensual, intimate and understood through experience, rather than through analysis.

The exhibition nods to Glenn Adamson, craft historian and curator and his idea of tenderness. Adamson conceptualised an exhibition based not on theory, analysis or critique, but on what moves us emotionally. Tenderness is not a quality of things, it is a way of looking, of paying close and sensitive attention to things, materials, and people.

In Poland, we rarely appreciate objects for more than their practical function or their role as markers of status. They are expected to be useful, and when they wear out they are replaced. At the same time, few families possess heirlooms; the story of the 20th century – war, shifting borders, forced displacement – sees repeated interruption of the passage of material heritage. Thus, in many homes, the only heirlooms surviving are ordinary household objects, rescued by chance or packed hurriedly into a suitcase at the last moment. These humble belongings have become material witnesses to relationships, memories and stories that were never told.

The works presented here bear witness to time not simply because they have endured, but because time continues to work on them. When a person dies, a home changes or a family ritual disappears, objects, family ephemera, are often all that remain and hold traces of what came before. They remain part of everyday life, recalling, shaping memories and giving meaning to places and gestures. In this sense, things o not merely hold memories. They are extensions of human relationships and testify to all they have witnessed.

Archaeology exists because the earth has no restoration team to clean what it holds by itself. Layers of dust protect things for centuries; patina slowly transforms them. The beauty of the works presented here lies neither in their newness nor in their perfection, but in their long-standing relationship with time. And so the exhibition invites us to spend time with the works as they are — to see them in the process of change.

Organizator: Design Institute in Kielce

Supporting partner: Nów.
