REST

Dominika and Julia began experimenting with traditional weaving during their studies. Their first joint project was Green Yarns Lab, the goal of which was to design highly tactile textiles from natural yarns, dyed using plants. In 2020, it was presented to the public during the make me! competition final at the Łódź Design Festival. Their refusal to contribute to waste has led them to embark upon RESTKI, a project to develop a material with which interior objects could be produced, made from leftover yarn. Currently REST collaborates with The Good Living Co.

The endless possibilities afforded to us by weaves allow us to makes strides in finding new haptic experiences. Textiles can tease, relax, massage, tickle…by manipulating traditional weaving technique we strive to introduce new, sophisticated structures into the interior environment, while stimulating the sense of touch that is so often neglected in our flat touchscreen era.
We weave our textiles on traditional shaft looms. Before embarking upon weaving a new design we go through a process of finding interesting structures on a weaving frame. Often this results in designs where a substantial portion relies on pure, manual handwork, rather than relying on mechanical assistance. The choice of yarn and fibre is made when working on larger samples, where an assessment of a textiles tactile properties can be made. We weave predominantly using natural materials such as Polish sheep wool, linen, hemp, caseine fibres and cotton, but we also strive to use surplus considered to be of no use by big businesses. In the event that such yarn is of non-natural origin, we always make sure this is made aware of.
